Sex (and Violence) Sells

In a landmark study by the Safety in Entertainment Foundation covering the last twenty years examining the content of movies in theatres and televised broadcasts of news shows, network shows and television movies, they found that the story content involved 95% violence, murder, sexual assault and inhumane behavior. It was a conclusion of the study that if this troubling content was filtered out, the actual opportunity to watch televised medium deemed ‘wholesome’ would be reduced to the Hallmark Channel, mostly, and reruns thereof, especially the Christmas specials. 

Similar analysis of the titillation of sex and nudity in televised medium increased the percentage up to 98% for ‘non-wholesome’ with some Hallmark shows falling foul of this filter as well.

The summary of the report indicated that if humans were nice and respectful to each other and represented as such in the visual media, there would be no subject matter for most story lines, and the writers and directors of the absolute majority of television shows and movies would be out of work.
